Camino Jacobeo Ebro

Since the Middle Ages, millions of pilgrims and pilgrims have followed the Route of the river Ebro, driven by his devotion to the Apostle Santiago. This road, which is part of a network of routes to Compostela, stands out for its rich tradition, art, history, diversity of landscape and gastronomy. The Ebro, as an ancient way of communication and pilgrims guide, we take you through a tour linking land and people of Catalonia, Aragon, Navarre and La Rioja. Emblematic points in Calahorra

The pilgrim who starts his journey to Compostela Rincón de Soto comes in Calahorra by the Way of the Carmen and is received by the Crucifix or Shrine. This monument, an important place of prayer of the SIXTEENTH century, marks the beginning of his route in the city.

From there, head toward the Sanctuary of Carmen and the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria. The baptismal font of this temple, a symbol of the Diocese, home to the characteristic symbols compostela: scallops and squash. Also the door plateresque San Jerónimo hook you up with the tradition of Santiago, highlighting an angel on a large shell.

Available routes

The people who come in pilgrimage have several options to tour:

  • historical overview:
      • From the Episcopal Palace, continues through the park of the Cidacos river and Calle Arrabal up to the Monastery of San José.
      • Ascends the Carretil, bordering the archaeological excavations until the Avenue of the Station.
      • From there, it continues to Alcanadre.

 

  • Current route signposted:
    • From the Cathedral, rises the c/ Cuesta de la Catedral, (at the height of the no. 5 to the right you’ll find a staircase to access the Pilgrims ‘ Hostel)
    • Go to the plaza of the Satin and visit the Church of Santiago El mayor, with its magnificent altarpiece.
    • By the c/Big-c and c/ Martyrs you come to the paseo del Mercadal, chaired by the city Council. Hence advancing to the c/ Gallarza and c/ José María Garrido up to the Avda. Santander, at the end of this street, and to the left. you will come to the road of Logroño, and, from there, to the Hospital of Calahorra. Go to the parking lot, behind the building of the hospital, and take the road signposted for the that will take you to the road of Murillo de Calahorra to continue the path to Alcanadre.

Ignatian Way

The Ignatian Way follows the path that St. Ignatius of Loyola traveled in 1522. This road begins in Azpeitia and ends in the Cave of Saint Ignatius in Manresa. In your journey Calahorra is located with the Way Jacobine of the Ebro, but in the opposite direction.

Ignatius of Loyola, born in 1491, was the founder of the society of Jesus and a spiritual leader who transformed the lives of many. Your search for the will of God led him to undertake a journey of transformation that continues to inspire pilgrims and sojourners today.
