Calahorra in a day
In the morning
Start your day in Calahorra from the Paseo del Mercadal, the heart of the city centre. It is an accessible area, with parking nearby and well connected with bus and train stations. This tree-lined walkway and pedestrian welcomes you with sculptures and references to key figures of the city, as ‘The Midwife’ and the roll jurisdiction of ‘The Girl’, which invite you to immerse yourself in centuries of history.
Little by little, your monuments, and architecture alive. In your wake, leave behind the city Hall and the imposing sculpture of Marco Fabio Quintiliano, a symbol of the roman past of Calahorra. Climbing up the streets Martyrs and Large, you come to the Tourist Office in the plaza del Raso, where you can collect useful information and maps that will help you make the most of your visit.
In front of the plaza of the Satin, don’t miss the Church of Santiago, in a sober neo-classical style. From there, the street Angel Oliván leads to the Museum of the Roman, where you’ll discover what daily life was like in the old Calagurris through objects, recreation, and archaeological remains.
A few steps from the museum, visit ‘The Medranas’, an interesting archaeological site that reveals a tower roman of the first century, part of the defensive wall of the city, and structures of presses of the SEVENTEENTH and EIGHTEENTH centuries, which reflect the importance of Calahorra in the production of wine.
From The Medranas, you can zoom down the street Navas and you get to the platform Garcia Antoñanzas, known as the plaza of Shops, and from there to the street, Costing the Cathedral. But before, a staircase to the left invites you to climb to the Rasillo of San Francisco, from where you can stroll through the old Jewish quarter or visit the San Francisco Church, which houses the Exhibition of Steps of Holy Week Calagurritana, declared a Fiesta of National Tourist interest” as well as the curious “Sacred Mountain”. If you prefer to avoid the stairs, you can take the road to The Tailors as an alternative.
Finally, your walk takes you to the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria. Stop to contemplate your interior: the baptistery, the chapel of the Holy Martyrs, and the mysterious Christ of the Ball, the protagonist of one of the legends most popular of the city.
Before accessing the interior should admire its classical facade in the baroque style, and destacra on the north side of the temple, the door of St. Jerome, the s. XVI.
At noon, it is a good time to return to the center of the city and recharge your batteries. You can do this up the street Mediavilla, or enjoying a ride quieter at the Park of the Cidacos river until accessed by the street Costs Fleming to the city hall area (zone Big street and paseo del Mercadal) where you expect to numerous restaurants to taste the local cuisine.
In the afternoon
After the meal, continues to explore the historic old town following the calle Eras, from where you’ll have views of the site of The Clinical core of the ancient roman city, the remains of the Walls of the street Juan Ramos, as well as references to the hot springs, in the street Eras. Along the journey, you’ll discover traces of the industrial past, such as a large brick fireplace, a witness to the boom in the textile industry of the area.
Following the Bellavista street, you’ll come to Planillo of San Andrés across the roman Arch of the Planillo. From there, visit the Church of San Andrés, whose sobriety exterior hides an interior baroque-rococo full of surprises.
Back toward the center, you can take a time to take a leisurely stroll, wander the streets of the old plot medieval and return to the plaza of the Plain , where you can take advantage of to visit local shops, enjoy a snack or taste one of the famous tapas in the bars of the environment.
For the night
When evening falls, Calahorra does not stop. You can close the day with a quiet dinner at one of the restaurants in the centre, where the cuisine of la rioja and the traditional flavors remain protagonists. If you are looking for a more lively, you can enjoy a drink at one of the terraces of Paseo del Mercadal or to participate in any cultural activity if it matches with the local programming: theater, cinema, concerts or any of the festivals of tourist interest.
And if you still have some energy, a walk at dusk in the Park of the Cidacos river or the brightly lit streets of the old town will allow you to say goodbye to Calahorra with the same charm with which you started the day.
