The Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Reyes Zapata, has unveiled the poster for the 30th Annual Vegetable Gastronomy Festival, which Calahorra will celebrate from April 17th to 26th.

Entitled “Color, Aroma, and Flavor,” the poster features a large and colorful still life of vegetables, with the Calahorra Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) cauliflower as the star. Artichokes, asparagus, leeks, lettuce, and tomatoes complete the composition, reflecting the produce grown in Calahorra’s vegetable gardens, which have earned the city the nickname “City of Vegetables.”

The artwork is by Navarrese artist Iñaki Fernández Iturmendi, winner of the first poster design competition for the Vegetable Gastronomy Festival, organized by the Calahorra City Council.

“Knowing that cauliflower is the queen of vegetables in Calahorra, I created a kind of still life fused with the surrounding vegetables, using plenty of light and tones that invite you to taste and eat them,” the artist explained.

Fernández Iturmendi won first prize in the 2008 poster competition for the August patron saint festivities in honor of Saint Emeterius and Saint Celedonius with his work ‘To the Sound of Bagpipes’.

Since 1990, he has participated in numerous poster design competitions, winning a total of 490 awards.

The Calahorra City Council received 66 posters; one was excluded at the participant’s request. Therefore, 65 works from various cities across Spain were ultimately submitted to the competition.

The jury, chaired by the Councilor for Tourism, Reyes Zapata, and composed of the Councilor for Festivities, Raquel Moral; the Socialist Councilor, Esteban Martínez; Álvaro Rodruejo, municipal building surveyor; Allende Garrido, a fine arts graduate; and farmer Roberto Vázquez, have chosen by majority vote the poster designed by Iñaki Fernández.

The winner of the competition will receive 800 euros.

The Vegetable Gastronomic Festival, declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the Calahorra City Council is already working on a special program to commemorate this milestone.

The rules for the fifth edition of the costume design competition for the “City of Vegetables” fashion show, to be held on April 24, will be approved in a few days.
