Embalse del Perdiguero
A few kilometres south of Calahorra lies the Perdiguero reservoir, a place where nature, agricultural tradition and outdoor leisure coexist in a single setting. This spot, open all day, is one of the most popular destinations for those seeking peace and quiet or outdoor activities in the natural environment.
This reservoir was created in the 19th century as part of the area’s irrigation system, harnessing the flow of the River Cidacos. Over time, it has retained this function whilst also becoming a meeting place for locals and visitors alike.
Its surface area, covering around 20 hectares, is bordered by a circular path that allows you to explore the entire area comfortably, whether on foot or by bike. This route makes it easy to enjoy the landscape from different perspectives.
A place to unwind and enjoy yourself
El Perdiguero is now a place designed for spending the day outdoors. It has designated rest areas, such as picnic areas, and offers accessible car parking, making it easy to visit.
It is also a popular spot for fishing, an activity organised within the reserve currently managed by the company Canijuelo.
Living nature along its banks
The reservoir is situated in an area of great natural value within the municipality of Calahorra. Along its banks grow various tree species adapted to damp conditions, such as poplars, aspens, elms and tamarisk, which provide shade and add diversity to the landscape.
The presence of water attracts numerous animal species. These include waterfowl such as the mallard and the grebe, as well as various fish that inhabit the reservoir, such as carp and eels.
A space that is constantly being looked after
To ensure it remains in good condition and is safe, the reservoir requires regular maintenance work. This includes tasks such as the replacement of key infrastructure components and specific interventions to manage the water level, always accompanied by measures to protect the local wildlife.
