Source of "The Hood"
The Source of the Roof is one of the springs traditional located in the environment of Calahorra, very close to the river Cidacos. It is an enclave simple, but with great historical value, linked to the use of water in the city over time.
The source is located on the right bank of the river Cidacos river, very close to the riverbed, even though slightly raised, a few meters above the river level. This type of location has been common in many sources in the area, taking advantage of the natural levels of the ground to facilitate the exit of the water.
The water naturally emerge between layers of gravels and sandstones own of river terraces, which explains its continuity and its relationship with other springs nearby in the same environment.
A source with history
The Source of the Roof has not only been a point of local supply, but also had an important role in the supply of water to the city. In the NINETEENTH century, built a water pipe to Calahorra, that came to a reservoir located in the rasillo de Santiago. From there, the water was distributed to several points in urban as the Big street, the Square of the Shops or the Portalillos.
These facilities gave rise to what are known as “sources of the Ochavo”, which were in operation until the end of the NINETEENTH century, when detected the deterioration of its pipelines. This data reflects the importance that had these springs in daily life before the arrival of the modern systems of water supply.
The source has a structure of stone and has two pipes, which indicates their suitability for continued use over time.
